RIVOLUZIONI is a video installation by Andrea Morucchio featuring the artist himself rotating a polished glass rod. The work is presented through a double, out-of-sync projection on opposite walls, accompanied by the rhythmic sound of hands striking the glass. At the center of the darkened room lies the same rod, broken and illuminated, surrounded by fragments scattered on the floor, while on a vertical monitor scrolls the poetic text What is “evidence” in this word “revolution” by Andrea Pagnes. Originally conceived in 2011 as part of Morucchio’s BACK IN BLACK exhibition at Ca’ Pesaro Museum, the video was born from the artist’s search for a unifying gesture across a decade of diverse works. The simple, circular movement of the rotating glass bar, as Morucchio explains, embodies an “ancestral rituality” (see works as EIDETIC BUSH, SRI YANTRA, PLAY GOD, ENGAGEMENT ACTS) -a pure, instinctive action that mirrors the formal and symbolic essence of his artistic language. When invited by Pagnes to present the work at the first Venice International Performance Art Week, Morucchio reimagined the video as a site-specific installation. The isolation of the architectural space inspired an immersive environment where sound, light, and reflection converge. “I wanted to create a multisensory setting,” he explains, “capable of engaging the viewer on multiple levels—physical, emotional, and intellectual.”
The inclusion of Pagnes’ poetic text marked the artist’s first integration of language into his work. Morucchio describes it as both an aesthetic and emotional element—its internal rhythm echoing that of the video—while also a gesture of personal and artistic affinity. As Stefania Portinari observes, “Morucchio swivels a polished rod of glass alluding to the cosmogonic spinning of the planets. The rod cyclically shatters, giving way to an eternal return, to a renewal that comes through the liberation of energy.” Through this cyclic gesture, RIVOLUZIONI reflects on creation and destruction, fragility and renewal, and the perpetual dynamics of transformation that define both the cosmos and human experience. Although not a performer by definition, Morucchio acknowledges the performative essence underlying his practice: every work, he notes, “derives from an act, includes an act, and ultimately describes an act.” In this sense, RIVOLUZIONI bridges the boundary between visual and performance art, transforming a minimal, primordial gesture into a meditative reflection on energy, presence, and the possibility of renewal.
